The ACT Directorate of Education and Training has Gone Google!
After an extensive two year trial of the online platform, which Harrison School was a major part of, the Directorate has finally started releasing Google Apps for Education accounts to its students!
What this means is access to student email, 30 gigs of cloud storage and the ability to create shared, collaborative documents, spreadsheets and slideshows on any device which connects to the internet, both at home and at school. Also, these accounts aren’t just locked to one school The student will be able to access the account at any ACT Government School, including Gungahlin College!
This is going to be a huge advantage for Harrison School, especially since personal devices are already a big part of our daily lives in the Secondary School. Access to email, calendars and collaborative spaces, no matter what type of device you are using, is going to go a long way to helping students access greater and richer learning opportunities.
Parents who attended the Information Sessions last week were able to get a sneak peak at what the service looks like and the advantages it offers. Don’t worry, there will be plenty more information sessions coming during this semester.
Students from Years 9/10 will be the first to receive this service, and notes have already gone home to facilitate this. The Directorate will not be assigning an account to a student until parent permission has been received, so if the note hasn’t made it home they can be collected from the Senior Front Office.
Years 7/8 and 5/6 will also be receiving the notes soon, watch this space for more info.
Attached to this post is the Privacy Information Sheet which has been created by the Directorate. It details how information is collected and stored by Google. If you have any questions about the service, please don’t hesitate to email me on firstname.lastname@example.org
